About Sarah Short

Oboist and pianist Sarah (Dohanich) Short currently serves as principal oboe with the Lakewood Symphony, second oboe & English horn with the Boulder Symphony, and as a pianist with Reclamation Church.

Sarah began studying the piano at the age of five and studying the oboe at age nine. She made her solo oboe orchestral debut at age thirteen while also competing at the Indiana state level of the National Federation of Music Clubs’ annual piano festival for four consecutive years. She went on to study oboe at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and the MasterWorks Festival. Sarah’s piano teachers include Donna Davis and Carolyn Edwards Jordan; and her oboe teachers include Linda Strommen, Roger Roe, Peter Cooper, Elizabeth Robertson, and Reid Messich.

Sarah teaches to enrich our current generation through music and to preserve this art form for the next generation. She believes that her role as a teacher is to provide healthy extrinsic motivation toward the goal of primarily motivating the student intrinsically, and to broaden the student’s horizons beyond what they currently listen for or strive towards in their playing. Sarah’s vision for her students is that they participate in music in society at whatever level is appropriate for their life stages, talents, and life goals. She looks forward to helping your student succeed!
